Chapter 21

Kasha heard the voices first. They were all familiar but seemed so far away. Then she opened her eyes and looked into the gray maelstrom of Leonidas’ swirling eyes.

“I’m okay,” she murmured before he could say anything else. She felt his hard body under her.

He was cradling her in his arms. “What the hell happened?”

Though she understood his words, they were more growl.

Kasha turned her head in an effort to look for Aile, and she found Tegin holding her in his arms. Hmm, she found the look on his face interesting, but she appeared to be coming to. “Lightning,” Kasha said.

“I’m fine. Put me down.” This came from Aile.

Kasha glanced around and saw Sondra and Logan with them, Terri was not.

“Where’s Terri?” Kasha asked.

“I don’t know.” Leonidas glanced over at the others. “Any of you seen her?”

Sondra shook her head. The others said no.

“Crap,” Kasha said, as she scrambled to get off Leonidas.

He hesitated before releasing her. “You sure you’re okay?” he asked again.

She touched his face. “Yes, I’m fine.”

“What’s this about lightning?” Leonidas asked.

“I poured some water at the center of the ground,” Aile explained, “where Renee’s scent disappeared and lightning struck. I used an old spell to get the water to tell me what happened there to try to track Renee and see if she had a connection to the lightning. When I did, there was an unforeseen reaction.”

“I’ll say.” Kasha chuckled and stood up. “The ground sizzled like we’d dropped grease on a hot plate, but it wasn’t just the ground sizzling. The clouds directly above us started a weird dance. I got a bad feeling and pulled Aile away from the ground, trying to get us out of the way. I barely got us from being hit by a hair.”

“Are you saying the lightning struck again? The same spot?” Leonidas asked.

Aile nodded.

“I thought on primary it was supposed to be rare for lightning to strike the same place twice,” Sondra said.

“Not unless you can call the lightning to you,” Aile said. “I think Renee found a way to use the power of the lightning to teleport. And my incantation bumped against the residue of the spell she used. So I inadvertently called the lightning like she did, but I was unaware it could be done, I still don’t even know how to use it to teleport. But she definitely is using the lightning to power whatever spell she’s using.”

“What the hell!” Logan said what they were all thinking.

“So magic exists here now?” Kasha asked.

Aile shook her head. “As I’ve said before, I still don’t think so, not as we know magic. I think Renee’s using the blood she stole from you to make this happen. She’s found a way to harness the energy in the lightning. I think if she can do it, you might be able to also, but we’re missing something.”

“Wait, what? Are you saying I can channel lightning?” Kasha asked, astonished.

“I don’t know if you can do it, but I think the capability is there.
